Menu
Sometimes it’s desirable to make sure one is looking at the very latest web pages, sometimes for casual use, often for news or development work. To do that means emptying the browser’s saved cache and reloading a fresh page. Here’s how to do that for three popular browsers on the Mac.
This article refers to OS X El Capitan, 10.11.5.
- Another option to force refresh a webpage from Chrome on the Mac is through the menu items of Chrome: Hold down the SHIFT key on the Mac Keyboard; Click the “View” menu and choose “Force Reload” Whether you use the Menu based approach or the keystroke approach to refreshing cache does not matter, both tricks work the same. Before we start, recall that browser history is a browser’s maintained list of sites that have been visited. Also, any one site may have its data, images, etc. cached by the browser so that it can be reloaded faster. Clearing the entire cache, doesn’t necessarily clear the history of browsing. Chrome and Firefox make this distinction clear; Safari does not.
Hold down Ctrl and click the Reload button. Or, Hold down Ctrl and press F5. Just open the Chrome Dev Tools by pressing F12. Once the chrome dev tools are open, just right click on the refresh button and a menu will drop down. This menu gives you the option of doing a hard refresh, or even clearing the cache and do a hard refresh automatically. Jan 04, 2019 How to force Chrome's script debugger to reload javascript? I. Chrome Cache
– Reference link: “Clear cache and cookies.”
– Chrome version used: 51.0.x.x
– Simplest steps.
Chrome > Clear Browsing Data… - In the window that opens, select the popup for the desired time period.
- Check just the box “Cached images and files.”
- Click on “Clear browsing data.”
II. Firefox Cache
– Reference link: “How to clear the Firefox cache.”
– Firefox version used: 47.0.x
– Simplest steps.
Firefox > Preferences. - On the left sidebar, select Advanced.
- In the horizontal tabs, select Network.
- Under “Cached Web Content,” click on “Clear Now”
III. Safari Cache
Safari 9.x, by default, doesn’t make a clear distinction between clearing browsing history and clearing browser cache. Some sites that discuss clearing the Safari browser cache point to Apple’s page: “Clear your browsing history.”
This is a kitchen sink approach because, in order to clear the cache, you end up deleting your browser history and cookies as well. It’s not a bad idea for the novice, but it also may not be what you want. However, there is an explicit, somewhat hidden method for dealing with just the Safari browser cache. You can even do it on a page by page basis.
– To Enable
Safari > Preferences. - Select the Advanced tab.
- At the bottom, check the box: “Show Develop menu in menu bar.”
A new Safari menu item will become visible called “Develop.”
– To Clear All Browser Cache

– Force Clear a Single Page’s Cache
One of the virtues of this method, once enabled, is that one can force the clearing of the browser cache for a single page with SHIFT + reload. That is, hold down the shift key and click the reload button in the address/search bar.

We're building a web-based visualization and I recently replaced the source file of an
<audio />
element on the server with another file of a different size but same name. When I reloaded the page in Chrome, the old sound was used. When I 'STRG+F5'ed the page, still the old sound was used. I then directly opened the mp3 file in the browser by navigating to the source URL of the audio element. Even then the old sound was used. I also tried opening the dev tools and disabled the cache - still the same.
With Firefox, the new sound was used after a forced refresh (Strg-F5), which is exactly the behaviour I expected to see. Any server-side caching is completely disabled, by the way.
What is Chrome doing here? Not that the sound file is the most important thing on earth (it is used programmatically as a warning sound), but I am a bit alarmed now that other resources may as well get 'stuck in cache'. Did someone run into the same issue?

Manual Reload Of Cache In Mac Chrome Windows 7
I ran over the same issue. I was debugging some CCS. The way I solved is: open developer console in chrome by pressing F12 then you are able to right click on refresh button and chose the third option (empty cache and hard reload). This will reload the page completely and should clear the cache. If you want to just relaod the page ignoring the cached content: ctrl + shift+r or ctrl + F5
